Valentine

I haven't posted since last July, but I couldn't let a Valentine's Day go by without making a card for my dear friend, Thelma. We exchange every year and she sends her cards to Loveland, Colorado for a special postmark.

This year's card was made using a scrap of paper stash (Memoranda) as a background for a fussy-cut of roses from a Stampington Somerset Studio magazine freebe. I stenciled on some texture paste, added some gold Stickles, framed it with fabric and used machine stitching to attach it to the card. The ticket text was typewritten and came from an old book of poetry.

Sweetest Thing

I've used a 20-year old stamp (Stampin' Up) on a scrap from a Somerset Magazine along with a Remnant Rub and 3D pearl drops along the border.

I wanted a background that would emulate the landscape but it was dark and I knew the stamp impression might get lost in it so, after stamping, I filled in it.

First with a layer of watered-down white paint and a tiny brush. Then I went back over the white paint with various Pitt Brush Pens to give it color.

I re-darkened the black stamp lines with an ultra-fine marker, as needed.

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

Silent

A small collage to share today with a link-up to Simon, the theme this week is "Feminine."

I used a Tim Holtz embossing folder (Roses) and distress ink on pink paper which, after embossing, was made flat again by running it through the press.

The lady is a Paper Doll made thin by peeling off the backside and rubbing off as much paper as practical. She was tinted with a Pitt Artist Brush pen.

A butterfly stamp (Prima) on tissue paper was applied along with torn scraps of a business envelope.

The text was cut from a book and the background paper came from an old issue of Somerset Studio.

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

Mr. Hegemony

  Manila Tag

Here's a tag with a background made from paper that came free inside a Somerset Studio magazine. I printed then hand-cut this vintage image, pasted it to the background and applied subtle shading with a water-soluble pencil. The newspaper text, Green Eggs Be Damned!, was added via an image transfer technique.

As a child, Dr. Seuss was the first author I became of aware of and I dearly loved his books and read them over and over again. I don't know what country I live in anymore where certain books are now banned. Isn't this what Hitler did? God help us.

I am grateful I can use my art to express my feelings and I'm linking this post to Simon's Monday challenge, this week's challenge is to use something green.

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

12 Tags for Christmas - April

This was inspired by Tim's April tag and his faux mosaic/paint resist technique but rather than follow along exactly, I went with my impressions instead.

The background is a page from the Dapper paper stash die cut with a Mixed Media thinlet to cover an entire tag. Purple cardstock was pasted behind it then crackle medium was spread over the cut-out areas and it was sanded and stained with Distress ink to give it an aged, old-world appearance.

The angel (Somerset Studio) and framed text (Kaisercraft's Frosted paper collection) serve as the centerpiece.

The tag border was embellished with Platinum Stickles (distressed with walnut ink) and tiny dots of Liquid Pearls.

Giselle in Print

Giselle was the name my French teacher gave me in the 8th Grade. All my classmates received a French name and it was the only one we were allowed to use (no English of any kind spoken ever, please). This is why, when it came time to name this piece, Giselle came to mind.

I'm proud to say she's on Page 121 of the January/February, 2015, issue of Somerset Studio magazine, a publication that features mixed media artwork. The call I responded to was the color lilac which may help to explain why there's so much of it!

I've blogged about this work previously (here) where you can read about the techniques I used. I almost hate to mention it because you'll see the drastic difference in the quality of the photos. Granted, Somerset has professional photographers but I REALLY must improve my skills. No more excuses!

Best Souvenir

Somerset Studio had a call for artwork, the theme was "Le Cirque," and this piece was published in their Summer 2014 Gallery issue.

As a child, my strongest memory of the circus were rows and rows of Kewpie dolls lined up for sale as souvenirs. They had pretty costumes with sparkles and feathers and I really wanted one. I haven't been to the circus since then and wonder what the best souvenir is now?

Sig and Gracie (in Print)

Have you heard that song by Pharrell Williams called Happy from the movie Despicable Me 2? It's nominated for an Oscar and topping the Billboard charts right now. It's a catchy tune that makes you feel happy when you hear it.

Well, that's how I feel today because I just received a magazine in the mail called Somerset Studio and the editors published my artwork in the Readers Expressions section of the March/April 2014 issue.

They regularly place calls for submissions and when the theme was "Le Cirque," I created Sig Sautelle and Gracie the Elephant and sent them in. If chosen, you receive a complimentary copy of their magazine. Here's a link to the current calls if you'd like to know more about it and maybe submit something of your own.

Hester Prynne

Published in Somerset Studio Gallery Winter 2012

The letter "A" is the prompt for Monday's blog challenge at Simon Says Stamp. This entry may not qualify for the random drawing because I made it two years ago, but I've never blogged about it and linked it anyway.

It seems many others do not enter "new" work because less than one hour after the post, there will be like 10 or 20 entries already of real elaborate items that I just know took longer than one hour to make.

So I'm guilty as charged because I wanted to have my post appear higher on the list so maybe more people would come visit and see what I made. How desperate and pathetic is that? I do enjoy the challenge of creating new work based on the prompts and will try my best not to post things made prior to the challenge date just to be first in line. There, now I feel better and it's good to get things off your chest (sorry Hester, no pun intended). She also chose not to conform to rules and beliefs, so I guess this piece is rather appropriate for today's post.

(Hester Prynne is the main character in a classic work of literary fiction written by Nathanial Hawthorne titled, The Scarlet Letter.)
